Lithospermum caroliniense

Common Name: Hairy Puccoon
Synonym(s): Lithospermum croceum
Soil: Dry
Height: 1 ft - 2.5 ft
Blooming: May Jun Jul

Only tolerates dry, sandy soils. Bloom period is quite long and mature specimens often bloom for well over a month. I have witnessed older plants blooming from May through late July. Attracts bees, butterflies, skippers, and moths. Seeds are hard "nutlets", hence the latin name. I have never seen this foliage damaged from mammals. Please do not purchase this species for your landscape if you do not have sandy soils. If your soils are well-drained, but maintain a moderate amount of moisture, please choose Lithospermum canescens.
